The Spanish and Latin American Studies Major began in 2007 as one of 14 majors in Korea which teach Spanish. Unlike the other departments/majors in Spanish, the curriculum of the Latin American Studies Major in Keimyung University focuses on Latin American Studies and aims at educating Latin American area specialists which profound knowledge on the region as well as fluency in spanish. Spanish Latin American Studies Major will answer to the local as well as national demand for Latin American specialists and expand the scope of academic community of Keimyung University adding one of the most studied regions to the area studies program of the Faculty of Area and Intemnational Studies.

Graduates from the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies could enjoy a wide range of opportunities. Due to growing demand from companies which want to expand their businesses and market in Latin America, those who graduate from the Latin American Studies major could find working opportunities at the area of international business and trade both in Korea as well as in Latin America. Those who participate in language programs or study abroad in Latin America can find positions at translation and interpretation agencies. Due to lack of Latin American specialists in Korea, there are opportunities in academic positions in higher education as well as research institutions for those who show potential to pursue academic careers. Moreover, many others are active with domestic and international tourism industry such as Korean Airline, Asiana Airline, domestic and international hotel chains.
